Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
