A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
